What’s an NPE?

NPE is an acronym for "non-paternity event" or "not parent expected". It's a term used in genetics and genealogy to describe when a person's presumed parent is not their biological parent.

Non-Paternity Event: A term used to describe a situation where the biological father of a child is not the man originally believed to be the father. This often comes to light through genetic testing or family discovery. It refers to the specific occurrence of unexpected parentage and can alter the understanding of family relationships.

The man you believed to be your father is not your biological father.

If you have learned that your biological father is not the man who raised you or, as an adult, someone told you that your biological father was someone else, confirmed through DNA testing - you are an NPE.

The woman you believed to be your mother is not your biological mother.

If you have learned that your biological mother is not the woman who raised you or, as an adult, someone told you that your biological mother was someone else, confirmed through DNA testing - you are an NPE.

You are adopted.

If you have learned that your biological parents are not the people who raised you or, as an adult, someone told you that you were adopted, confirmed through DNA testing - you are an NPE.

You are donor-conceived.

If you have learned that your biological parents are not the people who raised you or, as an adult, someone told you that you were conceived via sperm or egg donation, confirmed through DNA testing - you are an NPE.
